YOUNG OBSERVERS

One Club, Two Divisions, Empowering the Youth.

About

Young Observers is a group of young people who are keen observers of the world around them and strive to make a difference.
I created this group in 2018 when I was in 7th grade. Back then, I had been a kid columnist for four years for our community newspaper, Fullerton Observer. I wanted other kids to have the same opportunity I have - of being able to share our voice, gain experience in local journalism, and become active members of our community. I proposed and got approval from the chief editor to create and manage the youth section of Fullerton Observer which I named Young Observers. I recruited volunteer writers from our local schools and created the Young Observers writers club. So far, we have already completed five successful years with five annual conferences that also included awarding of certificates, games and "TED talks" on topics like local Journalism, publishing, and community service. In 2021, I expanded the Young Observers Club to explore opportunities beyond our community and provide club members the chance to become active citizens of the world. Specifically, we have partnered with Balete Family Farm School (BFFS) of the Philippines to build international friendship with their students while developing social and public speaking skills. This let me to create a second club, the Young Observers International.

Club members and select students from the farm school hold monthly assemblies during the school year. Team projects and team games are among the monthly club activities. Through this undertaking, we hope to create a meaningful opportunity for students from both countries to meet new friends and learn new culture while developing social and public speaking skills.
